Honestly, this blog is really just for fun. But then, if I’m going to tell this correctly, might as well start at the beginning. And oh dear me, I warn you, reader from the other side of the screen, that I will be painfully honest.
I went through a difficult time these past few months. Someone I really relied on disappeared and though I tried to be logical about the whole thing, I felt that I needed to do something. Anything. To take my mind off things.
And so one afternoon, as I was browsing through a bargain bookstore, I saw an interesting book: Compulsively Mr. Darcy by Nina Benneton. I had read Pride and Prejudice years before. I’m not sure if it was because of the Twilight craze, Bella spouting Shakespeare and Bronte all the time (yes, yes it was Twilight)… But there it was. It wasn’t exactly my first encounter with a P&P book either. I had read Darcy’s Story by Janet Aylmer just that summer. And I thought, sure, why not. I LOVED the original P&P. It wasn’t intimidating like I thought it would be and it was genuinely funny and lovable (but that’s for a different review and convo).
And when I finished that book, I bought Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James. And then I bought another and another and I think you, dear reader, know where this ends. Today, I have a growing collection of P&P books, both of the other editions variety and the variation, re-telling, and spin-off variety. Quite frankly, I’m not so much collecting as I’m hoarding (Note: this isn’t exactly new behavior for me so don’t be alarmed, it’s just a hobby). Sometimes, it’s kinda scary (I hope it’s not taking over my life yet, yeesh) but then most times it’s a lot of fun.
You might think I’m an escapist, using Jane Austen’s and other authors’ works to deflect all the pain and sadness (cue sad violin music), but really I’m not. I know better than that at least. MATERIAL THINGS or OTHER PEOPLE will not make you okay or happy or feel good. Only you and God can work it out. And I have more than my books in my life (truly I do, I’m busier than your average undergrad).
So why this blog then?
Well, for no other reason than this is an amalgamation of all the things I love, which is writing, books, and P&P. Now if I can find a way to insert a cat in here, then it’ll be perfect.
Oh don’t worry. I’ll find a way.
